DHS Department of Choral Arts
The Duluth choirs have a long tradition of excellence in the state of Georgia and abroad. They have performed throughout metropolitan Atlanta, New York City, New York; Nashville, Tennessee; Disney World, Orlando, Florida; and The Grand Bahama Islands as well as six international concert tours throughout Europe. Each year the choirs participate in the Georgia Music Educator’s Association State Large Group Performance Evaluation where they consistently receive the top ratings of “Superior”. Duluth is also very well represented in the GMEA All-State Choirs, Honors Choruses and GHSA Music Literary events yearly.

All-State Chorus

Selection for the Georgia All-State Chorus is one of the highest achievements for a choral student. It is also a great musical opportunity to work with some of the top choral conductors from around the world (not to mention the opportunity to bond with other students from the program and other schools around the state)! Students thinking about pursuing music in college should make every effort to audition for All-State since colleges hold this achievement in high esteem. In order to audition, the student must be a member in good standing of the DHS Choral program. Initial registration for All-State is in the fall and requires a non-refundable fee of $15. Prices are subject to change according to the fees set by GMEA yearly.

  • The first audition requires students to sing a memorized classical art song which you will learn in class, a capella scales (major, minor and chromatic), four tonal memories, and three sight-reading examples. All rehearsals for All-State occur during the regular class since these skills are taught daily. No after-school rehearsals will be held. Individual sight-reading work on ChoralTech.org (see music links page) is highly recommended. See Mr. Smith for a password. Any student auditioning for All-State is welcomed to sing their song for the class and for adjudication by Mr. Smith prior to the actual All-State audition.
  • Students who pass the first audition are then asked to pay an acceptance fee of $10 and then purchase the music and rehearsal CD for their choir (approximately $40) in late December. Students learn the music with the CD to prepare for the second audition. Once you pass the first audition, you are technically in the All-State Chorus. However, if you fail to learn your music for the second audition, you are removed from the chorus.
  • All-State chorus is held in Savannah in February or March each year. Since this is an enrichment Field Trip, students will be allowed to make up any work missed for this event.
  • SPECIAL NOTE: The auditions and the actual All-State Event are optional events that students may participate in. No transportation to the auditions or to Savannah is provided by the chorus department. If you pass the first audition, you should immediately make lodging and transportation arrangements for the event in Savannah. Hotels fill up quickly after the first audition. Students are welcomed and encouraged to make arrangements with other students/parents for lodging and transportation. Students’ parents should plan to go on the trip to Savannah. If students make arrangements to travel with someone other than their parents, a signed waiver is recommended. There is a suitable form located on the forms page of this site. Please check with Mr. Smith regarding hotels as he might be able to reserve a block of rooms for you.
